Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
