RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
